Before you ask me why I am still interested in 'Windows XP' in 2015 while Microsoft already dumped it, please let me respectufully tell you that in asmuch as browsers (especially portable browsers) such as Firefox, Palemoon, Chrome, K-Meleon, etc., keep supporting 'Windows XP', I will keep using 'Windows XP'. I am familar with ETBoot which can create SP3-compatible discs, but the resulting discs are machine-specifc which is not the case with the other projects I mentioned.Yes, I know. Unfortunately, all projects I know such as BartPE, WinBuilder, Reatogo, Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, etc., can create 'Windows XP LiveCD's' up to SP2 but not SP3. However, an almost true 'Windows XP SP3 LiveCD' for me would be one that is at least compatible with basic portable applications intended for 'Window XP SP3'. I know that an absolutely true (in the sense of a complete) 'Windows XP SP3 LiveCD' is impossible to create, for all LiveCD's are strip down versions of Windows. īasically the newer version of ERD commander.Dear e-readers,Please let me ask you, is there a true 'Windows XP SP3 LiveCD' project? By that I mean a project that can create a 'Windows XP SP3 LiveCD'. The Microsoft Diagnostic and Repait Toolser. I've not personally made a VistaPE dis bootable, though mainly because of a career change.Īdditionally, if you have access to TechNet, or something, you can look into their MS DaRT tool.

In all cases however, if you want the thing to be more universally used, you'll need to use the driver packs for the drivers. If you're looking for something a little more "ready made" you can get the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows: This one uses PE 2.0, so you can make it USB bootable more easily than the XP variant.īartPE is a little more robust though since most people prefer to use it. If you want to build with Vista, then you'll want VistaPE.

I used to maintain an AIO XP disk that could install XP in about an hour using these driver packs. It should be noted that the DriverPacks themselves are handy for creating unversal installation media that never asks for aditional drivers. You can find the driverpacks from here: In your case you could probably get away with just the Mass Storage ones. You can do some custimizing to make your life easy, but the base is: You can use a combination of BartPE and DriverPacks to accomplish this task.

I wasted a good bit of time trying to accomplish this a few months ago and then finally just did the whole install another SATA drive, install Windows from scratch, install BIOS update then swap the drives back.īut 1: I needed that SATA drive and it was only a temp usage and no longer free to use again so I'd have to buy another SATA drive or scrounge up another one and 2: we have a bunch of these Optiplex 990's in my department and a bunch of us are faced with the same issue so having a USB bootable live Windows option would be really handy for a bunch of use to share.Īll that said, has anyone found a easy way to take either a large USB flash drive (have a 32GB one) or a USB external HDD (have a 80GB one) and make it live bootable Windows? Sure, I can take another SATA drive, disconnect the existing drive, install Windows on it, then finally be able to do the BIOS update I need but its a real pain doing all that and I would LOVE to just build a bootable live Windows drive that'll work via USB and can be modified (written to) while being used so I can install Dells damn BIOS updater.
I even called Dell support a few months ago when I encountered this the 1st time and they confirmed there is no other way to update the BIOS other than from within Windows. Problem is, I have this Dell Optiplex 990 I run my XenServer lab on for testing around and playing with issues and Dell ONLY offers BIOS updates for this system from within Windows. It's easy enough to make a Linux "live" bootable USB flash drive or even an external USB hard drive that's bootable but it would appear that doing the same with Windows is not as simple.
